Boundaries

You can reprogram your thinking and transform your life. We now understand that the subconscious is vastly more powerful than the conscious mind. Your subconscious power has been organizing your subconscious programming throughout your life. There are ways to insure that your subconscious mind power is not sabotaging your highest aims. To develop subconscious mind power, start by consciously programming your thoughts by selecting the positive and rejecting the negative.

When someone has been traumatized as a child, it will alter the development of the child. The earlier the trauma and the more severe, the more likely there will be lasting effects. Not being parented the way you wanted to be can set you up for all sorts problems such as of issues with authority figures, being ill at ease in social situations, and be more likely to experience addictions, intimacy issues, anger and self-destructiveness.

Childhood abuse and dysfunctional families are not uncommon but often hidden and not discussed. In fact, family problems in general tend to be concealed or swept under the rug. Like a wound that lingers and festers, this can become a nagging and stressful situation.

When there is poverty, addictions, anger, divorce and violence in a family, it is usually the children who are most deeply affected. But more subtle forms of family dysfunction also take a toll on kids. Parents who are absent or indifferent or just don't know how to be a good parent can also cause lingering emotional scars.

Parents with bad boundaries raise children with bad boundaries. That means that the appropriate mode of feeling and behavior is missing or impaired. If you were made to feel that you aren't good enough, that is a kind of spiritual wound, as it may affect the rest of your life. A spiritual wound is about emotion more than it is about logic. It is not what is in your head, but what is in your heart that is the problem.

Any organism that is prevented from getting what it wants or needs is said to be frustrated. And frustration causes anger. This anger may be directed at the self or at others. Anger directed at the self makes someone into a victim who is indifferent to their own self interests. Anger directed at others makes someone antisocial – indifferent to the feelings of others, which in the underlying factor in violence or crime. In either case this bad behavior hurts self or others because the appropriate mode of feeling and behavior is missing.

Every living cell has two modes: growth or protection. It has to be either one or the other and not both at the same time. The energy and chemicals in a cell that would normally be used for growth and maintenance is used up when a cell is in the protection mode. And over time a cell will suffer or perish if it is unable to return to a normal growth condition.

Unresolved stress, fear, and negative emotions will eventually result in diminished health and illness. When someone is pushed beyond their limits, they will shut down or flee. If you hold your breath until you pass out, then your body takes over and you breathe again. So when the mind and body oppose each other, the body will eventually prevail. It is simply a matter of self-preservation.

Life is ever more stressful as the complexity of life increases. So finding and developing a coping strategy is essential. Unfortunately the media typically portrays characters who, when there is a problem resort to a weapon or a bottle of whiskey which only compounds the problems.

An athlete is a better role model because a good role model keeps his cool because he has rehearsed the appropriate mode of feeling and behavior. Training the body, mind and emotions in preparation for a contest, the athlete envisions the future and rehearses to increase stamina and agility. Many of the best athletes have a visualization coach whose job it is to train their mind.

We are capable of imitating movements, actions, skills, behaviors, gestures, sounds, speech etc. because we have 'imitation systems' in the brain. Hero and heroine refers to people who display courage in the face of danger and adversity. A guru is one who is regarded as having great knowledge, wisdom and authority and who uses it to guide others (teacher). The term role model generally means any person who serves as an example, whose behavior is emulated by others.

The phrase "mind's eye" refers to the human ability for visualization, or for the experiencing of visual mental imagery; in other words, one's ability to "see" things with the mind. You hold your past successes and failures in your imagination, ready for recall.

"We know that the mind “is incalculably powerful and can solve our problems if we go about using it the right way. The best way is to hold in your conscious mind as often as possible a clear picture of yourself already having accomplished your goal. Know what you want. Define it clearly, and then project it on the motion picture screen of your mind. Hold it. See yourself doing and having the things you have when your objective will have been reached. Do this as often as practical, particularly at night just before you go to sleep and the first thing upon waking. As you do this, your subconscious will begin to lead you toward your objective. Don't fight it. Follow your sudden hunches, the ideas that come into your mind, knowing that they may well represent subconscious knowledge.” - Earl Nightengale

Creative visualization refers to the practice of seeking to affect the outer world via changing one's thoughts; using the power of your imagination to create what you want in your life. There are many different ways that creative visualization can be used but the most important thing to remember is to use creative visualization often, to make it a regular part of your life. Most people seem to find that it works best to practice it at least a little every day, especially when they are first learning. Creative visualization is such an innately powerful process that even five minutes of conscious, positive meditation can help balance out hours, days, even years of negative patterns.

Essentially emotion directs the focus of your thoughts. And since you can learn to manage your emotions, this is an important key to changing your life for the better. Quietening the mind is the central idea of meditation. There are various kinds of meditation techniques, both religious and non-religious. Finding the one best suited to you is essential. By practicing these simple, yet very effective techniques you will increase your ability to focus mentally, handle stress, and perform better in all areas of your life.
